Piper
Piper awoke that morning before Thom, who still lay dozing beside her in their shared bed. She watched him for a moment and then, moving slowly so as not to disturb him, stood and quietly descended the polished wooden staircase. Rounding the corner into the kitchen, she filled a glass with water and drank until not a drop remained. The straight-figured young woman, still in her ivory pajamas, shuffled down more stairs into the living room, where she parted floor-length red curtains to let in the new-day sun. Retaining a loose grip on the curtains, she squinted through the separate rays of light that beamed from the windowpanes. With an air of relieved calm, she looked out over the shoreline of her property and, though the reflection off the water's surface stung her eyes, she smiled. Tyr Antilles
I like these short stories. They may not tell many important things but get you in the world atmosphere and make you really "live" there.
