Winter Wind
In a recent FYI were posted common questions and answers on the new "Luck" attribute: Q&A: What's Luck Got to Do With It? It’s that time again, so let’s get to it! After tons of questions about luck on the boards, and plenty of answers from MrTact and others, it seems fitting that this week we’re focusing our Q&A on the new addition of Luck in UO. Question: In the shortest way possible, could you tell me what Luck does? Answer: Some monsters, upon death, will have magical items in their loot. Your Luck rating has a chance of increasing the number of magical items in that loot, increasing the number of magical properties for each magical item, and/or improving each magical property of each item. Question: Hm. Are you saying blacksmithing isn’t affected by Luck? Answer: That’s correct. Luck only affects magical items that are generated when certain creatures die, and won’t improve the items you craft on your own. Luck specifically comes into play at the moment of a creature’s death. Most monsters essentially have no loot except for gold, but when one dies, one of several possible loot "packages" is created for it. There’s a certain point in the creation of that loot when magical items could be generated, and that's when your Luck is important. Question: So how important is my Luck rating? Answer: Well, the basic loot will be offered to you no matter what. If the creature is going to have magical items, you’ll be offered at least the minimum number of items, each with at least their minimum potential. In this way, you won’t lose out by having a low Luck rating, but it never hurts to try to give yourself better odds at getting better magical items. By the way, if you’re fighting a monster in a group, only one person’s Luck rating will be considered when the loot is generated. The person who contributed the most to the kill, as far as damaging the creature, will be the one whose Luck is checked when the magical item checks occur. Question: How can I find out more about Luck? Answer: There’s a few ways you can do that. We have a Luck subsection in the UO.com’s official playguide. You can also keep an eye on the Stratics boards, where our own MrTact, Lead Server Engineer for UO, has been happily discussing Luck, among other topics, for the past couple of weeks. Speaking of the Stratics boards, if you’re interested in joining in any of the conversations that UO’s development team is participating in, you can catch up quickly by checking in with the Development List page, here.
