Prometheus
Anyone at all either playing or planning to play this new game? I'm playing on the Phoenix server, as a member of the Real Life linkshell (the guild equivilant in FFXI).
Balandar
Didn't know they made those for the computer. Thought they were playstation, or saga or something. Lots of PvP? How many per server? etc?
Prometheus
Currently, it's One character for $12.99 ... but you can purchase an additonal "Content ID" for an additonal $1 a month. Though, you can literally switch between classes (the orginal 6 FF ones) at will. Only reason you'd need another character is to play on a different server. PvP is coming (according to the most recent notes) it will be consentual (No PKs) and probably something to do with the current Conquest system between the nations of FFXI. The biggest gripe most people have had about FFXI is the lack of a server selection. When you create your character, you are put on a random, low population server. There are 2 ways around this. First, and easiest, someone in game buys a "Worldpass" which is like a password that lets up to 5 friends create a character on your server. The other way is just to recreate your character until you get on the server you want. I lucked out and got on Phoenix on my FIRST TRY, but others are not so lucky. If anyone wants to join up, I'll spring for a worldpass. But they are only good for one week, so it'd be best if several people came in at the same time. Balandar
Hmmm, think I will hold off on that. Without PVP I would lose interest, also it would take a bit of time to learn the history for roleplaying. I think I will hold out for WoW and do something else until then. Study I suppose.. get a job after I get my degree this winter too I guess.
Borg
If you have a large group of friends in FFXI and/or you seek a homebase....we could look to create you a section on the website for that.

Martok
Well, tell us more about the game! I have read up on it some, but thought it was more Japanese blah blah stuff. Tell us what you think Kodoz and Prom!
kodoz
First of all, the Graphics are superb. I think they are better than SWG. The party and hunting systems are without flaws. The only problem i find is the problem of gaining money fast enough to equip yourself fully at each couple of levels. The abilities and attack capabilities are awesome, gameplay is perfected, and the game is bugless. I dont see that much of an opportunity for RPing yet however, but when i do you can be sure ill tell you.
Hothgorn TheBlack
Please continue Kodoz. *more*
Prometheus
Yes, the graphics are absolutely stunning. It's like playing a live action FFX. My new big gripe though is losing XP when you die. I got used to it when I played DAoC but in FFXI, you can actually lose a level in doing so, which can be very very frustrating. Also, I've noticed one little problem in the combat system: If you try to attack a monster that is moving, your character will not actually take a swing at it until it stops moving. But, if you try to run from a monster, the monster will get off several hits as you run .. and will often chase you entirly across a map. Which has led to some pretty bad monster trains by some people, but I don't blame them when given the choice between running to town and death and possibly level loss ... I'm assuming, Kodoz, that you're playing a warrior type. I find most of the warrior types don't gripe about level loss like us mage types do And since there isn't much equipment a mage can use, I haven't had any money problems. kodoz
You assume right Prometheus. But i do think the level loss thing is fairer than if it wasnt there, because if it wasnt you could fight anything and not care if you died. I do agree that the moving monster thing can be a horrible thing and frustratiing at that, but hey, id give two more mistakes like that before this game is even slightly messed up. Ive found a trick to get lots of money and EXP though, so im happy.
Prometheus
Well this morning I actually decided to make my character a Monk ... the easy changing of job classes is another great feature. I'm used to losing XP with DAoC and all. It's just the level loss that really upsets most people. It also kind of discourages you from exploring. Hothgorn TheBlack
Would you say then, that the game is more like Final Fantasy 1-6? Or more Like Final Fantasy 8-10? Does it have the whimsical, magic-tech that many of us have loved in the series? Does it have an insane amount of Magic Items? What about spells? How does the combat flow? Does combat break away like in the previous FF games? How does one learn/advance their skills? Does it have a crafting system? etc etc..... Prometheus
Oh boy lets see: Game is more like FFT as far as classes go. You have your 6 basic classes from FF1 that open up other classses after certain requirements are met. Tech level seems to be about that of FF4 I'd say. There's mainly swords and sorcery but also some classes can equip guns. And there are airships that you can take between cities. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of magic items just yet, but lots and lots of equipment in general. Lots and lots of quests to do. And I found out last night that under the Conquest system, you can spend conquest points you accumlate on some decent equipment too. Spells are pretty straight forward. You get access to better spells as you go up in level, and you must buy/find any spells. Not automatically learned as you go up in level. Each class has specific skills like weapon skills, magic skill, etc, that go up with use. When a warrior uses his sword, his sword skill goes up. When he sucessfully parries an attack, his guard skill goes up. When a mage casts Fire, his elemental usage goes up. When he casts Poison, his enfeeblement skill goes up. You get the idea. I'm not sure how exaclty each skil affects the game just yet, but the general idea is the higher your skill, the more accurate and damaging you are with said weapon/magic. Plus, if you switch classes, you get a portion of any skill you already raised applied towards your new classs. When I switched to Monk yesterday, I had a decent amount of evasion from my black mage levels to start. There are a few crafting houses, but I'm not too familair with them yet. Blacksmithing, tanning, fishing, culinary, and a few others I can't remember.

Chris
This game is getting very frustrating. 1) The controls and commands take forever to learn. 2) People don't talk. I stood in the middle of a crowd asking over and over again how to bring up the map to find where to turn in my newbie ticket type thing and it took nearly an hour to get one person to respond. 3) Unless you're in first person mode pushing the right arrow makes you look LEFT and vice versa. Having to stay in first person mode in order to navigate drives me nuts. 4) I've been unable to find any menu to customize the controls. 5) Even the lowest level equipment take so much money to buy that by the time you have enough money for it you're a higher level and need better and more expensive equipment in order to survive. 6) The combat system seems like it was designed for a standar turn-based single player rpg where you never have to worry about other monsters wandering too close and jumping in. Also, having to spend an entire day making your character over and over again to get on the server you want SUCKS Edited November 7, 2003 by Chris

kodoz
Well chris id like to answer some of your points. 1. you werent answered because 50% of the people are japanese. its been out for about a year now in Japan and they have a lot of followers. 2. If you know how to get money, its no problem at all affording equipment. If you get on Lakshmi at any time look me up and Ill show you the trick to getting 3k gil in 2 hours. 3. Stop using your D-pad (up and down, left and right arrows) And use the arrows on your number pad! they turn the correct ways! Hopefully this helped you a little bit, and if not then I at least feel I tried.
