mixin' it up a bit..

Well, I'm once again feeling the pull of wanderlust and find myself wandering back into another game for a look around.

Anyone have any advice on what class/race I should make my first new character to make money for equipment(I only have the kunark expansion)?

For those who are saying to themselves "who the heck is this crazy bum?", I joined PGoH back in 2000 or so and spent a couple of years as a dragoon. At some point in there I tried Everquest, but with a monitor that made the forests seem black as night I got lost way too easily and quit very soon after. A couple of years later I retired from the PGoH legion, but instead of enjoying my retirement ended up as Governor of Illyceum until I eventually felt the pull of wanderlust and left for other games. I spent several months playing Shadowbane, where I was thrust into a long-standing conflict with the T.H.E branch that formed there because they followed a vile Confessor. After a major power shift that changed the entire continent on Shadowbane I found myself wandering off to a galaxy far far away. I served as an officer of the Imperial Trade Consortium on SWG until Martok/Savrem/whatever left the game to become and orc and now find myself leading that branch of our organization against an endless onslaught of heartless rebels.. which brings us to the present. I'm not planning on leaving SWG in the near future, but to satisfy my endless appetite for variety I'm poking my nose back into EQ to see what kind of trouble I can stir up here.

Somebody find me a crowbar! :)

All depends on what type of player you are. Are you the type that wants to be in the front row? if yes make a Warrior/ Pally/ Shadowknight. If you like to sit back and do some damage but dont really want to depend on a group make a Druid/ Necromancer/ Mage. If you like to keep others alive and be the life of the party make a Cleric ( Clerics rule by the way ). As for race, thats up to you. Diffrent races have their pros and cons...just have to check it out and see what ya like. If you wanna be the supreme class and race you should make a Halfling Cleric ( again Clerics rule and so do Halflings ). what ever you decide to make * cough * Cleric halfling * cough. its all about what ya like to roleplay as. Look us up in game and we can point ya in the right direction.

Well, I definitely need a character that can do damage and get frustrated when I have to find a group in order to hunt, so maybe I'll try a mage or something. I like clerics, but every time I play a healer on any game people start dying.

What does AA stand for?

AA stands for Alternate Advancement. It's a feature in the game that allows you to further enhance your skills, such as strength, healing power, etc. You can switch your regular experience to AA experience and gather AA points that way. Then you "buy" the skills with your points. It's really cool the more points you get. Anyway, don't listen to Meiffo, High Elf clerics are the way to go :)

Here is some more detailed info that may help you a bit. Once you read it - go to the link below and you can read more info on those classes you are interested in.

Casters Realm Everquest

Click on the Class link on the left.

Here is a rough Breakdown.

Melees/Hybrids:

Warrior - Pure Melee - no magic casting . You have widest selection of armors and weapons. (Weapon types - 1 (Hand Slash), 1 (Hand Blunt). Piercing (1 Hand), 2HS, 2HB, 2HPiercing), Bows, throwing weapons. Early levels are solo and easy - after about 5-10, you MUST group to level fast and well. Dual Wield and Double Attack make then high damage dealers. Not a solo class.

Berzerker (New Exapnsion Needed - Gates of Discord) - 2Handed Weapons ONLY and thrown. Has some 'effects' in their weapons (like snaring a mob) but this calss is still being learned and tried out. Prob Not a Solo Class.

Rogue - Thieves, sneaks, lockpickers and BACKSTABBERS. their strengths are in their backstabbing criticals and the poison they can use on their blades. Not magic users, but there are places in game only these guys will get you to or get to.

Paladin - Hybrid - all weapon classes. Paladins have limited heals, buffing ability, and stuns. They have a 1 use per game day effect called Lay On Hands that heals a lrge amount of health. Good secondary/primary melee class. Some soloing possible.

Shadowknight - Evil Paladins - Their 1 use per game day effect is a LifeTap - draining hther mobs of health and transferring it to them selves. They also get a skeleton pet , but it is about 9 levels below the SK's level. Still - they are just a hair more effective than Paladins. They have spells and can CAST Feign Death as a spell. Some soloing Possible

Ranger - The Paper Tank - Dual Wield, Bow Masters (nasty at highest levels), Tracking. These guys add great DPS to gameplay but they are jokingly loved as walking corpses waiting to be hit. soloing possible, but limited.

Monk - Total Body Weapon. Weight MATTERS to them - it reduces their effectiveness. But as they get higher in level they become better damage dealers and can handle more damage without armor. They can Feign Death as a Skill. Fast and great damage dealers. Soloing possible, but limited.

Bard - Song Masters - While they melee, their power is in the songs they sing. a bard at high levels is a power unto themselves. soloing possible from mid to higher levels.

Pet Classes:

This list is for those classes that HAVE a CONTROLLABLE pet.

(SK's above have a pet)

Beastlord - No pet until level 9, but they combine melee ability and a pet partner so they are essentially a fightng pair. Spell casters, they focus on slowing and body enhancements, and have a mana regen spell they can cast on others. Soloing very possible. (Need Velious expansion to have these)

Magician - (Caster Class) Elemental pets - 4 of them. The pet DEFINES this class. They have fire based Nukes and are the 2nd best Nuker in the game. They have amost NO ability to enhance (buff) others, EXCEPT their pets and them selves. they are the summoners f the game. Very Soloable, but not as a Melee class.

Other classes have pets at higher levels, but they are not defined by their pets.

Casters:

Necromancer - I mention this one first because they ARE both a Pet class and a special caster class - they have the most unique line of spells. They combine body and mind drain spells (others and seld) to body and mind enhance spells (sometimes the effects are draining themselves to strengthen another). They can summon corpses. Necromancers are considered by many to be the most effective solo class and the deadliest clas to go one on one aganst (in PVP) at the highest levels.

Wizard - THE nukers in game. And also one of the 2 Teleporter classes in the game. It is that simple. Some soloing possible.

Enchanter - Mind Candy, Mezzer, Haster, buffs, Charmer, Enchants Items, etc. This class has a LOT of versatility. They have an ANIMAtION (pet) that is automatic when cast - it is NOT controllable until HIGHEST levels. They also fold when sneezed on.

Healers/Specials

Cleric - Dedicated Healer. Buffs. Dont leave norrath without one. Low solo ability at any level.

Druid - Druids have a little bit of everything - making them the most soloable class in the game. They have hysical enhancements spells (SOW - Spirit of Wolf - THE increase movement spell of the game spell), DoTs, snare/root, heals, mini nukes. They get a lil pet at higher levels. Most effective outdoors.

Shaman - The Physical Body enhancement spell caster - You want sta increases? Look for a shammy. Best Slower in game. ESSENTIAL for a Planar group - the mobs need to be slowed. Pet at higher level. Soloable, but limited.

These are general tidbits that way help. Go to the link to get a lot more info.

couple more questions:

1)How can I find out who from the guild is online?

2)What times are people usually on?

3)Does the game still require me to be in the same zone as the person who does a guild invite? :)

1)How can I find out who from the guild is online?

If you have an account, you can download EQIM and talk to people in the game. You can look at the Roster to get a few names to add to your list.

2)What times are people usually on?

Most people seem to be on from about 7- 2 am EST, but there are always other people on during other times.

3)Does the game still require me to be in the same zone as the person who does a guild invite?

You have to be in the same zone to get a guild invite. We normally only accept people lvl 50+, but I wouldn't mind making an exception. You just won't be able to group with many guild members until you get higher.

Due to an inability to play during times when people from the guild are actually on (those are the same times that I have work to do in the SWG branch) I've decided to join Call of Honour instead. I will still be available to help alts and such as needed (of course)
