  1. TAMPA, Fla. — A teacher will claim she was insane due to emotional stress and did not know right from wrong when she had sex numerous times with a 14-year-old student, her attorney said Monday. "What teacher in her right mind would do something like this?" attorney John Fitzgibbons said after a brief hearing for his client, Debra Lafave (search), a middle-school reading teacher. The judge agreed to appoint two mental health professionals to evaluate Lafave, 24. Prosecutors have said a state psychologist already determined Lafave was not insane, while one hired by the defense concluded that she was mentally ill. Lafave's trial was set for Dec. 5 on four felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition. Each carries a maximum 15-year prison term. Fitzgibbons said plea bargaining broke down because prosecutors wanted Lafave to serve too much prison time, though he did not give details. "To place an attractive young woman in that kind of hell hole is like putting a piece of raw meat in with the lions," said Fitzgibbons. "I'm not sure she would survive." A state attorney's office spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. The boy told investigators he and the teacher had sex in a classroom, her house and once in a vehicle while his 15-year-old cousin drove. He said Lafave told him her marriage was in trouble and that she was aroused by the fact that having sex with him was not allowed. 6. I hate using notepad to view source with I.E... sooo.. I changed it to textpad using the following: If you are using Internet Explorer, and you choose View > Source, the program that automatically launches and shows the source code of the webpage you're viewing is Notepad. What if you want another program to view the source code of the page instead of Notepad? This simple registry edit should allow you to do that. It works on Internet Explorer 6, tested on Windows XP but should work on Win98 and beyond. (Backup your registry first just in case!) Run REGEDIT, follow the following directions to the proper key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE |- Software |-- Microsoft |--- Internet Explorer |---- View Source Editor |----- Editor Name (Default) = C:\windows\notepad.exe If this doesnt exist (but it should) then create the Key "View Source Editor" Then create a Key within that named "Editor Name". Modify the "(Default)" value to make it point towards any program on your computer using "C:\Path\To\Your\HTML Viewer.exe" (without the brackets).
  7. MONDAY, July 4 (HealthDay News) -- By being careful and making wise choices, you can enjoy your summer barbeques without having to worry about cancer-causing chemicals in your food. That's the word of the day from Stephanie Vangsness, a nutritionist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. High-heat grilling can convert proteins in red meat, pork, poultry and fish into heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which have been linked to a number of cancers. Another potential cancer-causing chemical called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is found in the smoke created when fat and juices drip on hot coals or rocks in a barbeque. The smoke can deposit the PAHs on the surface of the meat. Vangsness offered the following safe grilling tips: Select lean cuts of meat. Trim all excess fat and remove skin. When using marinades, choose thinner ones. Thicker marinades tend to char, possibly increasing exposure to carcinogenic compounds. Use marinades that contain vinegar and/or lemon. Partially cook meat in the microwave before you put in on the grill. This will reduce the time needed to cook the meat on the grill. Making sure meat is thawed will also reduce cooking time on the grill. Discard juices before you grill. This will reduce flare ups. Flip burgers often - once every minute. Place food six inches from heat source. Create a barrier -- such as a sheet of aluminum foil with holes poked in it -- to prevent meat juices from spilling onto hot coals and producing harmful smoke. Smaller cuts of meat, such as kabobs, take less time to cook. Grill vegetables. They don't contain the protein that forms HCAs. Vangsness emphasized that people need to keep their grilling-related cancer risk in proper perspective. "If you're grilling and following the proper safety tips, the risk of getting cancer from grilling food is extremely low," she said in a prepared statement. She also said people should eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which contain protective antioxidants.

  10. "CNN is reporting that a planet has been discovered in a solar system with 3 suns. The observation brings into doubt the theory stating that planets form from the dust orbiting around a single sun. The discovery also resulted in a new method of searching for extrasolar planets-- until now most searching focused only on single-sun systems." (Reuters) -- Astronomers have detected a planet outside our solar system with not one, but three suns, a finding that challenges astronomers' theories of planetary formation. The planet, a gas giant slightly larger than Jupiter, orbits the main star of a triple-star system known as HD 188753 in the constellation Cygnus. The stellar trio and its planet are about 149 light-years from Earth and about as close to each other as our sun is to Saturn, U.S. scientists reported on Thursday in the current edition of the journal Nature. A light-year is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km), the distance light travels in a year. If you stood on the planet's surface, you would see three suns in sky, although its orbit centers around the main yellow star among the trio. The larger of the other two suns would be orange and the smaller would be red, astronomers at California Institute of Technology said in a statement. The new finding could upset existing theories that planets usually form out of gas and dust circling a single star, and could lead scientists to look in new places for planets. "The implication is that there are more planets out there than we thought," the commentary said. Caltech astronomer Maciej Konacki, who wrote the research article, refers to the new type of planets as "Tatooine planets," because of the similarity to Luke Skywalker's view of his home planet by the same name, with its multiple suns, in the original "Star Wars" film. The fact that a planet can even exist in a multiple-star system is amazing in itself, according to Konacki. Binary and multiple stars are quite common in the solar neighborhood, and in fact outnumber single stars by some 20 percent. But so far, most extrasolar planets -- those discovered outside our planetary system -- have been detected by watching for a characteristic wobble in the stars their orbit, reflecting the gravitation pull the planets exert on their suns. This method is less effective for binary and multiple star systems, and existing theories said planets were unlikely to form in this kind of environment. Konacki found a new way to identify planets by measuring velocities of all bodies in a binary or multiple star system.

  15. Pope Opposes Harry Potter Novels - Signed Letters from Cardinal Ratzinger Now Online RIMSTING, Germany, July 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSiteNews.com has obtained and made available online copies of two letters sent by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was recently elected Pope, to a German critic of the Harry Potter novels. In March 2003, a month after the English press throughout the world falsely proclaimed that Pope John Paul II approved of Harry Potter, the man who was to become his successor sent a letter to a Gabriele Kuby outlining his agreement with her opposition to J.K. Rowling's offerings. (See below for links to scanned copies of the letters signed by Cardinal Ratzinger.) As the sixth issue of Rowling's Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - is about to be released, the news that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed serious reservations about the novels is now finally being revealed to the English-speaking world still under the impression the Vatican approves the Potter novels. In a letter dated March 7, 2003 Cardinal Ratzinger thanked Kuby for her "instructive" book Harry Potter - gut oder böse (Harry Potter- good or evil?), in which Kuby says the Potter books corrupt the hearts of the young, preventing them from developing a properly ordered sense of good and evil, thus harming their relationship with God while that relationship is still in its infancy. "It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," wrote Cardinal Ratzinger. The letter also encouraged Kuby to send her book on Potter to the Vatican prelate who quipped about Potter during a press briefing which led to the false press about the Vatican support of Potter. At a Vatican press conference to present a study document on the New Age in April 2003, one of the presenters - Fr. Peter Fleedwood - made a positive comment on the Harry Potter books in response to a question from a reporter. Headlines such as "Pope Approves Potter" (Toronto Star), "Pope Sticks Up for Potter Books" (BBC), "Harry Potter Is Ok With The Pontiff" (Chicago Sun Times) and "Vatican: Harry Potter's OK with us" (CNN Asia) littered the mainstream media. In a second letter sent to Kuby on May 27, 2003, Cardinal Ratzinger "gladly" gave his permission to Kuby to make public "my judgement about Harry Potter." The most prominent Potter critic in North America, Catholic novelist and painter Michael O'Brien commented to LifeSiteNews.com on the "judgement" of now-Pope Benedict saying, "This discernment on the part of Benedict XVI reveals the Holy Father's depth and wide ranging gifts of spiritual discernment." O'Brien, author of a book dealing with fantasy literature for children added, "it is consistent with many of the statements he's been making since his election to the Chair of Peter, indeed for the past 20 years - a probing accurate read of the massing spiritual warfare that is moving to a new level of struggle in western civilization. He is a man in whom a prodigious intellect is integrated with great spiritual gifts. He is the father of the universal church and we would do well to listen to him." English translations of the two letters by Cardinal Ratzinger follow: Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger Vatican City March 7, 2003 Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby! Many thanks for your kind letter of February 20th and the informative book which you sent me in the same mail. It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly. I would like to suggest that you write to Mr. Peter Fleedwood, (Pontifical Council of Culture, Piazza S. Calisto 16, I00153 Rome) directly and to send him your book. Sincere Greetings and Blessings, + Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger ======================= Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger Vatican City May 27, 2003 Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby, Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day , birthday and Easter mail. Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter. Sincere Greetings and Blessings, + Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

  20. The first two books were not very good at all. They were very short and to the point, they had very little information to suck the reader into the story. Things like if it is cloudy, cold, snowing, raining, breeze, smells, etc... Nothing. The third, fourth, and fifth were great. She included that information in the books and it really sucks you into the story. I would recommend people just watch the first two movies and skip the first two books.
  21. "The CBC is reporting that about 15 copies of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" were accidently sold at a 'Great Canadien Superstore' in a suburb of Vancouver BC. The Canadian Distributor, Raincoast Books managed to get an injunction prohibiting the people who recieved the books from talking about them and demanding that they return the books to Raincoast until Friday. To add a carrot to the stick, raincoast is offering various goodies including a signed bookplate." http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2005...ter_050711.html
